Hilde Lotz-Bauer – a construct of course, but one created by Hilde, but also of the paternalistic age!

She was born in 1907, Hildegard Karoline Helene Clairy Bauer to August Bauer & Bertha Bauer (née Sollman).

As a young photographer she had created a stamp to identify herself as creator.

In 1935 she married Bernhard Degenhart and sometime after that had another stamp made. It is interesting that she combines her surname with her husband's. But by putting his surname before her maiden name, is she subordinating his name or emphasising the continuation of her 'Bauer' professional identity?

In 1939 she and Degenhart split, and Hilde reverts to identifying herself by her maiden name.

In 1941, she marries Wolfgang Lotz and creates her third and final stamp, now using the name we identify her with today and which Hilde herself used in her exhibitions.

These are the only stamps she had, but she also identified herself mostly on the back, but sometimes underneath the photo as:
